I reached down and picked up the missing crayon, which was white, and without even thinking said, "What's the matter, little guy? Are you injured, lost or just playing hookey?"
"None of the above, Maam," the little crayon sniffled softy into my hand. "It's just that nobody ever uses me to color or sketch because I'm colorless. I'm just an insignifigant no-count color that is useless, worthless and ignored. Kids and artists alike prefer the bright reds, pinks, oranges and purples...and I'm left alone in an empty box."
I couldn't believe I was talking one-on-one with a sobbing crayon, but Hey! Johnny Ray, singer and song writer, made a million bucks back in the 50's when he recorded a heart-to-heart conversation he had with a Little White Cloud that Cried, Remember?
Well, I'm thinking to myself, if he could bring his fans to tears with his rendition of chatting with a crying cloud back then, why can't I do the same by chatting with a crying crayon, today?
"Don't cry, little one," I said. "Things can't be that bad. Without you, what would a bride wear? A purple wedding gown? Or what would painters do when they needed to paint a picket fence or a church with a tall white steeple, and there wasn't any white?"
But the little white crayon continued to weep and sob in utter despair.
"Remember when the Greatest Artist, Decorator and Creationist in the universe created our world? Well, He picked you, little one, out of all the other colors to beautify the world and make it our home. He specifically chose you to give His sky some Oomph, as a plain blue sky without white clouds would be monotonous.
"And when it came to His mighty oceans, He again used you to color the waves as they break and crest on their way to shore. And nothing is more elegant than a swan, so to emphasize their elegance, God needed you. Red, aqua or violet just wouldn't do the trick - it had to be White."
The little white crayon was beginning to perk up. If a crayon could puff up with pride, I think he would have.
"Can't you see that without you, our world would be incomplete? And what about those snow topped mountains? What a beautiful sight for all us Earthlings to enjoy."
"I hadn't thought about that," he said sheepishly. "Thank you, Maam, for reminding me."
"Don't cry anymore, little one, you're not worthless and useless; in fact you are very important to both God in Heaven and man on earth.
" God promises man that: "Though our sins be as scarlet, (or black as coal) we shall be as white as snow," Isaiah 1:18
"And man claims that very promise when he prays: " Purge me, Lord, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." Ps 51:7"
Placing the little white crayon back into the crayola box with the others, I smiled. He may be ignored and rejected by man down here, but is highly regarded by God up there, as a symbol of purity, perfection and purification.
I don't think he'll cry anymore.
