We headed out at the dawn of a new day. Soon we pulled down our visors and put on sunglasses as the sun played peek-a-boo through the evergreen trees lining the road. Having made this trip before, we looked for our favorite landmarks along the way; such as the barn red Lodge at Strawberry and rustic pine cottages that dotted the hillside. Charred land reminded us of the fire of 1993. We were grateful to see new growth. As we rounded the bend on the mountainous, curved road, our anticipation increased as we caught our first glimpse of the lake. You have to understand my husband and I grew up around water – so we have a special love for water.

“I see it,” I said to my husband.

“Yes, of course, I see it too,” he said. Thinking I was referring to the lake.

I wasn’t. With its colors of red, yellow, blue and green, the hot-air balloon seemed stately high in the sky. On an earlier trip, we watched the balloon descend onto a barge then bought to shore. A newly wedded couple and the justice of the peace disembarked from the balloon.

We arrived early at the motel. I reached for my sweatshirt and pulled it over my head to rid the morning chill. Although our room wasn’t ready, the friendly staff invited us to participate in their continental breakfast. With our tummies full and coffee and hot chocolate in hand, we headed for the lake, but not before taking in a deep whiff on the smell of pine. Talk about paradise – this was the place!

With a clear baby blue sky and the warmth of the sun we headed toward the water. The motel was just across the street from the lake. We walked down warn wooden steps to the sandy white beach. We took off our flip-flops and waded in the cool water. We watched as chipmunk’s scurried from rock to rock. We walked along the weathered pier. We stood in the morning sun and enjoyed its warmth. We took a panoramic view of the Sierra Mountains that surrounded the lake. Late winter snow was visible on Mount Tallac – one of the highest peaks in the mountains that ring the lake. As we returned back down the pier, employees were getting ready to open for business. Jet-skies, sail-boats, peddle-boats and the like were available to rent. There was a restaurant that opened for lunch and dinner. Canadian geese flew over head on their way to enjoying the water or sandy beach. A few children were already playing in the water or building sand castles. We sat on the shaded bench and enjoyed the serenity of the lake and each other’s company. It wasn’t long before we saw one of two paddle wheel boats that transport guests around Emerald Bay. The Tahoe Queen leaves from California and the M.S. Dixie departs from Nevada. We spend hours enjoying the lake.

After dinner and with camera in hand we headed back for the lake and watched the sunset. What a beautiful display of pinks, yellows and oranges. One picture was taken of the lake amidst pine trees – the trees made a heart-shaped frame around the lake. Our first day at Lake Tahoe (the Washoe word for lake) had come to a peaceful end.
