TITLE TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE
My friend Priya called one morning to report that she was having an eye problem and could not see with her right eye. I offered to take her to the ophthalmologist who explained to her that due to high blood pressure she had blood from broken capillaries in that eye. The blood was preventing the light from reaching the retina, hence the lack of vision. This condition would be temporary if she took care of her health. Priya was upset that problems at work had caused this set back and explained how difficult it was for a Christian to function in a secular society. She was always the perfectionist who stayed back to complete what others had left undone. Colleagues often took advantage of this good nature and soft spoken Priya was often stressed.
Several visits to the family physician, rest and prayers helped Priya to get better. Friends from church came over to encourage her and to assure her that God was in control of her life and future. Later the doctor suggested laser surgery to improve the vision Priya was very upset. She was living alone as her parents were in a different state. I went over as often as I could to encourage her. We read the Bible together, talked a lot and prayed claiming God’s promises. At times we went to the Mall and walked around to see what was new. Priya was a believer but when problems came she had many doubts and fears. Even though she had a lot of knowledge from God’s word she would not apply it to her personal need.
Believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and we are privileged to belong to the King of Kings. With such a high calling we are expected to be perfect. But we often forget that we are still here on earth with all our frail human weaknesses. Satan too is near to discourage and accuse us. There is so much around us that makes us stumble and get disheartened. But our Redeemer lives so we can look up and cheer up.
Just as the hands of Moses were supported by Aaron and others, we need other believers to encourage us. When one member suffers in the body of Christ the other members of the body are also affected. Believers need to be sensitive to the needs of fellow believers and help in whatever way possible.
