Real friendship involves loyalty. (Proverbs 17:17, TLB.) While growing up
Learning how to acquire friends over the years, I’ve seen them come and go. However, I do recall having one good friend, a neighbor Jeanette, who was reliable all the time in situations when I needed her. I remember times for instance, if any one wanted to bully or fight me, or steal my money or for any reason that was giving me trouble, she was right by my side fighting for me. All I can say is “WOW”, what a friend to have! She stuck to me like glue; and we went everywhere together. Once she even took me with her when she visited her parents at their jobs.
Jeanette is the fourth child out of thirteen brothers and sister, I always wondered where in the world they all slept… just how many beds was necessary to handle all the people in here? I was curious about the sleeping arrangements that when she invited me over to do homework, I just had to ask her where she slept. As we went into Jeanette’s room, which she shared with three sisters, it just amazed me because they were teenagers, much older than us, and in high school. We were just coming out of elementary school. When Jeanette and I entered junior high we had lots of fun. She was always straight forward with me. Our favor it expression was, “friends forever” When I first met her mom she asked me “how many were in my family”. “I told her, at the time, there were six of us children in the house. I, also, proudly told her, I was the oldest, She said, “Oh my! That is beautiful”. We learned about each others background, and our respective families.
Upon the decision I made to accept JESUS for my personal salvation in my life.
I was concerned that she would not be my friend any more. When I ask my mother about friends accepting people as a Christian or who chose living for Christ, what do you think? My mom said “Honey, a true friend is closer than a brother and will be there for you through thick and thin.
We stayed friends throughout high school and medical school, until I dropped out! She stayed in touch with me until I had my first child. During a time when we talked, I told her I had started to black slide from Christ; she encouraged me by saying” you can’t do that”. When I ask why, she said, “Because I just accept Christ in my life.” I was so shocked! Just hearing she was living her life as a Christian blessed me to go forward in my beliefs.
The last time I heard about her she had moved into some town in New Jersey.
I, also, moved to another state about that same time. We lost touch for twenty one years, which was after my oldest was born. Upon moving back into the metropolitan area, I thought I would be able to find her. But have not been successful yet. Last year, my cousin told me, “You will see her in time.”
And now I feel like I can’t wait. But I will keep this Scripture writing in mind:
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time of war, and a time of peace.
