In 1936 I.B. Sergei Wihtol put words to an old Latvian tune. The first verse reads:
“My God and I walk through the fields together.
We walk and talk, as good friends should, and do.
We clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughter
My God and I walk through the meadow’s hue.”
The song then goes on to describe their conversation, their closeness, as they walk together down life’s pathway. Imagine having this kind of relationship with God! Imagine having Him close by at all times, hand clasped in yours, sharing everything, the good times as well as the problems, “as good friends should, and do.”
We talk about walking with God, but how many of us walk as closely as Wihtol’s words indicate? How many of us feel God’s hand clasped in ours as we share our problems, express thankfulness for our joys, cry on His shoulder in our sorrows, and, best of all, simply talk over the mundane, ordinary facets of our lives. Proverbs 3:6 (KJV) entreats us to, “In all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy path.” Note the word, “all.” That means not just the trials and triumphs, but the usual, the routine. If we do this, we can be certain that He will not only direct our path, but will walk down it with us, hand-in-hand.
