How do you expect me to relax with everything that is going on? That one simple word would make me feel like a pressure-cooker whose top is going to blow any second. It is not that what he says is wrong, but mostly because it is spot on.
When we get stressed out about things it is often because we rely on our own efforts and abilities to make things work instead of trusting God in His faithfulness that He can look after us. It ties in with what Danny believes that when there is an area in our lives that we are stressing about, it means we have not yet fully given it to God. We hang on to it with the belief that we can take care of things. It is exactly then that we should calm down, step back and let God do what He does best¯work everything for our good.
But why is it so difficult to not stress and just calm down and give things into God's hand?
I have reasoned it with myself as my fear of being inadequate and not being considered good enough to take care of myself. I do not want to be seen as weak and therefore, I would rather bend under the pressure of demands than stepping back and admitting to God, I cannot do everything but I know He can.
God knows us and that is why the Bible says in Hebrews 4:11, “Let us labour therefore to enter that rest…” God knew it does not come naturally to us to be still, to rest in Him and relax about the demands of life. We need to make every effort to not rely on our own efforts, so that He can do what we cannot. It does not come by doing nothing, but by doing everything you can to not do everything¯A simple truth yet so complex for our human minds to comprehend.
I believe that the answer does not lie in pretending to cope under the increasing demands of life, but to relax and admit to God, "Lord, I cannot, but You can."
