Jason sent text messages all morning while he was running his delivery route for the landscaping company. "Hi Hon, what are you doing now?" He knew his wife was home-schooling five of their children while trying to occupy Jason Jr. and Lillie, but he needed another distraction to break the monotony of driving alone.
"The same thing I was doing ten minutes ago, Sweetheart. I'm glad you're not demanding."
"Demanding what?"
"If you were a demanding husband, I'd be in trouble. I can't get anything done when I’m on the phone all day long."
"Do you want me to stop texting you?" Jason responded.
"Are you driving? Then, yes, stop texting me. It's dangerous and I need you to live and help me take care of these children."
"Okay. Bye."
Fifteen minutes later the phone jangled. "Daddy," two-year old Jason’s face lit up, as he and Lillie raced for mommy’s cell phone.
"Hi, Honey. You call so often little Jason recognizes your special ring tone.”
"Smart boy - just like his daddy. I wanted to let you know I'll be home early today. One of my deliveries was just cancelled."
“That’s great. We’ll have an early supper and relax the rest of the day. You’re right! Your son is more like you than you realize.”
The door squeaked as it opened. Little Jason, their only boy, jumped up, ran to greet Daddy and hugged his legs tightly, causing him to almost lose his balance. “Hey, little man, are you trying to knock me off my feet?”
“Daddy – me – go for ride?” His innocent, expectant, adoring eyes pleaded.
“Hon, do you need anything from the store? Jason wants to go for a ride.”
“I’ve made a list of a few things, if you want to pick them up.”
Little Jason grabbed several hotwheel cars and trucks to play with in the van. As Daddy buckled him in the car seat, Jason said, “Ouch,” and pulled a cell phone out from under him, scattering his other toys all over the back seat. “Uh-oh”.
Daddy watched as Jason held the phone with both hands, looked at the buttons and started punching them purposefully.
“What are you doing, Jason? Calling Mommy?”
Jason teasingly smiled into his Daddy’s eyes and replied, “Texting.”
It was Daddy’s turn to say, “Uh-oh.”
