A glance at the gas gauge said I wouldn’t make it very far.
My pocketbook was empty and I thought of staying home;
But church was so important that I risked the drive to town.
I only thought of getting there, that was my only goal.
I knew I needed worship time; food for my starving soul.
I rolled into the parking lot, letting out a giant “Phew!”
I raced into the building, eager for some tunes.
I wasn’t disappointed; the band was all in place,
And soon the presence of the Lord was filling up the space.
I feasted and I soaked, in the music and the Word.
My spiritual tank was being filled; God promised that it would.
After church was over and I chatted with a friend,
The problems of the world outside started slowing creeping in.
I shared only just a little of my worries and my fears;
She hugged me and she whispered a prayer in my ear.
Back in my car, I breathed a ragged little breath.
As I fumbled with the key, I felt heaviness in my chest.
Would you help me make it home God? And I trusted as I prayed.
He answered my so quickly, “My child, don’t be afraid”
I felt an urge to peek into the pocket of my coat
And was amazed and delighted to find a folded note.
Inside it was a greenback, a twenty-dollar bill!
Up my spine, I felt a delicious little chill.
I knew that God had answered me before I even asked;
He used my friend to carry out an important little task.
The whole thing made me think of a line in the Lord’s Prayer:
‘Give us this day our daily bread” should be my only care.
To worry about tomorrow is not the Faith-filled way.
God knows our needs and meets them with just what we need today.
As I drove up to the gas pump, I gave thanks for what I’d learned:
Living for the kingdom should be my primary concern.
Your Heavenly Father already knows your needs and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the kingdom of God your primary concern. Matthew 6. 31 NLT
