“Look at that tree! Isn’t it gorgeous?” I didn’t even pay attention to where she was pointing at because I was so busy with my own distracted thought.
A tree just stood there, its leaves waving hesitantly with the wind, a sagging leaf landed on my feet. As I kicked it away, I thought, “So what’s so special with that tree?”
“You know, the joy of a walk brings back memories of my childhood vacation pleasures when I was just unaware of the time, when I just savored on the beauty of nature.” Dana’s face lit up with her usual sparkling smile, her young face showed no trace of worries.
Birds came flying by , chirping its usual tune. Dana gripped my hand in excitement.
“How I wish I could sing so beautifully like the birds and fly mightily too! But I guess I just have to be content and be grateful I can walk, and can carry a tune, right?”
“Uhum..” I was silent for awhile deep in thought. I breathed a sigh of annoyance as I started thinking of my stressful job, bills to pay, even my aching feet. The sun blinded my eyes that I regret not wearing my sunglasses during that hot, summer day.
Dana walked slowly that I have to pause to wait for her, hoping she would hurry so I can go back home soon. Didn’t she know I have countless things to do?
She stopped for a moment and exclaimed, “The sun feels soooo good! It’s like a kiss from God !” Then she laughed and jumped like a child. Her childlike faith never cease to amaze me. She looked up at the sky above, took a slow, deep breath, spread her arms wide, turned around in circles, and in a dancing gesture sang, “This is my Father’s world… And to my listening ears…All nature sings, and round me rings...”
“Aren’t you thankful to God for your eyes to be able to see all the beauty around you?”
Dana’s question stirred my apathetic, cold heart. I was glad she didn’t see my face getting red. I blushed as I replied, “Yes, I see them very clearly now. Thank you for reminding them to me. “
You see, Dana is blind, yet she’s seeing more from her heart than I had ever seen with my eyes. I learned from her that we don’t need 20/20 vision to see and enjoy the wonderful creations and blessings around us.
I looked at the tree and saw the brilliant traces of deep scarlet around it. Its emerald leaves were dancing with the wind. The sun’s rays kissed my cheeks and I felt God’s tender love. I thank my Creator for once I was blind, but now I can see.
