We finally got our chance, after searching on and off for a location for our restaurant. No one seemed to want to take us under their wing and give us a chance. However, when my brother began building a 5-unit complex on our town’s main street, he even said no, not a good idea. Then one day he surprised us all and said he thought the Lord said to go ahead and give us that chance that no one else would.
It seemed like all of our dreams came true, Finally, our own restaurant. Well that was a good thing, wasn’t it? After all, the town was growing, (to much and to fast for our taste) but why not jump on the bandwagon and it was my husband’s life long dream.
After all the pain staking preparation, we finally opened. I was having fun, a new adventure; I’d never worked in the food business before. I looked forward to greeting and chitchatting with all the hometown folk. My husband on the other hand was living it 24/7. Constantly mulling things over and over in his head such “ Did I order enough ranch dressing? Are we going to run out of chicken Friday night?” Working 14 hour days, he lost 30 pounds the first few months. (Of course I’m the one trying to lose weight!)
After the first year the recession started and I thought it would get better, things will turn around but they kept getting worse. What did we do wrong? Maybe, this wasn’t a good thing. Maybe, we should have prayed more. But the timing seemed right.
We were open for 2 years before we finally realized it was bad timing. We had no choice but to close.
We can second guess ourselves and beat ourselves up or ask: “what did we learn from this?” I know what the bad was, but what was the good?
I believe we were a light shinning in a dark world where people could come for a brief moment to eat or pick up their food and feel God’s presence, knowing that something was different. We befriended the lady who lived down the street, gave food as we could to those in need. We were blessed by the new people that came into our life. There was good in the bad, and we did make a difference everyday by being God’s extension touching the lives we came in contact with. Even in the darkness of failure, God’s love shines through.
