Much to my chagrin, some brave souls followed me wherever I went.
“But Mom,” they sang, “we just have this one thing to ask of you.”
I looked down at the four faces I love so dear, “One question, then off with you,” I allowed. Their queries satisfied, I locked myself away, secure in my office, ready to face the quiet. “Now, I can write,” I thought.
I seated myself at my desk, computer turned on. Then I saw them. The papers strewn on the shelf challenged me to ignore them one more moment. Dust particles danced in the light rays streaming in from the afternoon sun before landing on the furniture, and the carpet screamed for a turn with the vacuum. Oh, the list was endless.
Several hours later, my husband knocked at the door, “Honey, would you like to watch a movie with us?”
“Of course I would,” I called back, “but I can’t. I have this article to write.”
“How much more have you got to do?” He asked.
“All of it, there was too much else to do.”
“But the kids were quiet, they cleaned the house too.”
“Yes, but, the quiet was too loud. I couldn’t concentrate.”
