Jenny looked down at her sleeping father, her face betraying the worry that had continued unabated ever since last evening’s horrific situation, which had spurred her 911 call. Now, the frightening scene churned through her mind once more. The terrifying occurrence had begun at the conclusion of the celebratory dinner Jenny had prepared for her father’s 65th birthday, when he had suddenly reached to touch his head, his eyes glazing over the moment before he had crumpled to the floor.
It was an apparent stroke the emergency room crew had agreed at the hospital. Which kind of stroke her father had suffered was now being debated by specialists as they sorted through results of several tests. Though they had tentatively given her some hope for his survival, it was agreed that his memory capacity probably would be severely limited at best.
Jenny sank down into a comfortable chair in the private room and let her mind drift to happier times. There were many memories to savor, to calm her fears about the present. Family times were the best, mostly holiday reunions with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. Her father had faithfully kept a diary of those gatherings, as well as other happenings. For some reason she had not fathomed, Jenny had slipped the journal her father had given her to read into her briefcase that now rested against her chair. She reached down to retrieve the volume and moments later began to lose herself in the neatly written and supremely inspiring recollections of the still elegantly handsome man she had always adored. Much later, Jenny closed the book. If she read on she knew that she would soon come to the sad entry of her mother’s death, and in her present emotional state, Jenny found the prospect of revisiting the grief she and her father had shared 5 years before. Instead, she set aside the journal and retrieved the well worn Bible her father had gifted her with years before. Jenny closed her eyes and let the King James Version fall open at random, with hope in her heart that the higher power to which they had always clung would speak to her now. Before opening her eyes to read the words where her searching fingers had come to rest, Jenny prayed. “Dear God,” she whispered, “give your angels charge over him. Let them be with him now, to spare his life and the memories he has always cherished.”
Later, after she had been told about an apparent miraculous prognosis for her father’s case, Jenny reread the Bible verse that had so joyfully enveloped her being in rainbows of eternal promise. It was Psalm 91, Verse 11; “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
