Now apply that to conversations with God and you can imagine the levels of confusion that we hit. And if the problem isn’t with the Sender—well, then there must be kinks in the receiver.
I pray and I pray (well, maybe not that much), but I just don’t GET what He’s saying in response. So after a few rounds of “Huh?” or impatient finger-tapping, I give up and do it myself (I’m a woman, and that’s what we do).
What am I missing? A neighbor of ours—an ex-divinity student and lapsed Catholic—likes sharing an anecdote something to the effect that he’s called God, but it rings and rings and no one picks up. He leaves a message, but never gets a call back. The neighbor smiles, wearing a clever expression, and coolly moves to another topic. I suspect he knows on some level that his story needles me, which only adds to the attraction of telling it.
He, like me, is missing the clarity of response that he’d like to receive in a world full of hurting. He wants the finger of God writing on stone tablets, a voice booming from the heavens in stereo, a prophet to interpret his dreams. He wants the burning bush.
But that’s not (usually) how God communicates. He speaks into our hearts and minds, or those of our neighbors: all fallen instruments.
But He speaks.
He speaks through circumstances, events, hardships, joys.
But He speaks.
And Oh! the joy and comfort when He does and I get it. I have felt the peace radiating through me, the almost touchable knowing that I am deeply loved and cared for in the middle of my difficulties. I have even found myself inexplicably happy when there was no worldly reason that I should be, and so certain of the source that I had to share it with the people around me.
He speaks.
In that message, there was no confusion. My cares melted away in the arms of my Savior, lulled by the sound of that gentle voice smiling at my senseless worries. And I found that no burning bush was necessary to communicate His love.
