“Chairden?” Someone called to her. “Is that you?” She wanted to ignore the attention so she lazily turned to look towards the voice. She was excited to see that it was her friend Tonya from college that she had not seen in years.
They embraced. For a moment the pain that Chairden was feeling hid behind a smile. The girls caught up on old times and Tonya explained that she had come back home to make arrangements for her upcoming wedding.
“Ouch!” Chairden thought and her discontent started to show.
The disappointment made her long even more to capture Jared and his love. She was 27 years old and he was an acceptable prospects.
“What’s wrong?” Tonya asked.
Chairden just remained quiet as she tried to decide the best way to respond. “You’re getting married?” She asked.
Tonya ran with the question. “He’s great. I feel like I am the luckiest woman in the world to be marrying him.” Tonya explained. Chairden let a small tear fall as she whispered, “yeah, pretty lucky.”
Tonya was oblivious to Chairden’s pain until she asked, “How about you: Do you have a boy friend?” As innocent as Tonya was, this question cut Chairden deep. She started to cry. “I’m not doing so well in that department” she admitted.
Tonya couldn’t believe it. Chairden was attractive, smart and a sure catch. Tonya gave her that assurance.
Chairden asked Tonya for advice. “If you really feel like you love someone won’t God bring that person around to the idea too; I mean, of them liking you?”
Tonya caught a little off guard by the question just said, “I’m sure that if God wants two people together it will happen in his time.”
“What do I do in the mean time; I mean, I feel like I know who I want to be with, but right now it seems like he hates me. What do I do?”
Tonya intended on making a try at an answer but she was interrupted. Chairden pointed and said “see the guy in the green hat? That’s him. His name is Jared. I asked him if would be in my small group and he told me he had something else going on. It was a real put off.”
“Chairden, does he know that you like him?” Chairden was surprised by the question. The answer was not obvious. “He has never noticed me.” She said.
“Guys can be a little dense. They don’t know what they want until us girls tell them.”
“How did you and Dave know that you loved each other?”
Tonya wanted to lighten the mood, “I told him that he like me,” she said in jest.
They both laughed. Chairden’s eyes drifted towards where Jared was sitting. He was alone. She wondered if he liked someone else. Tonya watched Chairden who kept her eyes Jared.
Jared looked towards the girls and quickly snapped his head back to its original position when he noticed they were staring at him.
“He just looked this way. Pretend like were talking” Chairden told Tonya. “We are talking silly.”
While the girls were intentionally ignoring him he got up and started to walk closer.
He was shaking.
“Could it be that he’s coming this way” Chairden wondered. As he came closer he slowed up his pace.
He was extremely nervous. There was a cool breeze pumping through the large concourse but he was sweating. He’d never dated. So, he remained single at age 25. He was always to busy with school and afraid of talking to girls.
When he reached their table Chairden acted surprised to see him there. He sputtered his reason for coming. He was so embarrassed about not being able to talk that his speech got worse.
“Maybe… Maybe since I can’t join your small group I…Uh…You… we could…Um.” He rolled his eyes at himself for being such a dork and not being able to speak. “Do you want to get lunch?”
Tonya just winked her approval to Chairden and said, “We’ll catch up latter.”
Chairden now took her turn being a dork by jumping in excitement at the offer. “I sure do. Yes! I would love to go to lunch with you.”
