On hearing a sermon on thanking God, thanking Him through the
Good and bad, thanking Him through the trials and storms, I thought, “That’s crazy. How do you thank God when you are going through trials and storms?” “That would be like thanking someone for stepping on your foot or getting your hand smashed in a door and saying thank you”.
But on reflection of this I realized that life is full of trials and storms. The attitude we have determines not so much the outcome but how we come out. A sour attitude will make it that much more difficult to go through trials. A good attitude can make the trial seem lighter and shorter.
The Bible tells us that life and death is in the power of the tongue. We can speak to the mountains in our lives and they will be cast into the sea. How? By prayer and thankfulness.
God allows trials to strengthen us and to teach us lessons. If He didn’t love us and want the best for us, he would just let us do what ever we wanted to do. As our Father He will discipline us, He will teach us and help us to grow spiritually.
So, I may not say “Thank you” if I smash my hand, but I will say “Thank you”, to a God who loves me. I will praise Him for the trials and storms because it is then I know He has not left me, that is when He is teaching me. I may not like it but I don’t want to speak death to my situation. I want to speak life and come out a better person ready to move to the next level that God has for me.
There are things in my life I am waiting for, promises to come to pass, so I’ll thank God for those promises; and just like a seed that has been planted that needs water, nourishment and sunshine to grow I am going to “feed” my promises with praise and thanksgiving. I am not going to allow satan to swoop down and devour my seed. I am going to cover it with praise.
While a smashed hand or wounded toe may hurt, at least they were not broken. Chase that gloom away, don’t sit around in despair, start praising. When you do it takes the focus off of you and your mountains and puts them on God. Then He can come in and move on our behalf.
