There once was a giant who lived in a village by the sea. He had a gnarly face and missing teeth—scary to you and to me.
He wasn’t always pleasant; he wasn’t always kind. To strangers and neighbors alike, he walked as if he was blind.
Blind not by sight, but by his heart—he was filled up with hate. He knew not peace, love, hope or joy—he thought it was too late. (Romans 3:16-18)
One day the giant took a walk through the forest grove. As he trotted down the path, he felt a presence he hadn’t known.
The path led to a deep dark cave, the giant was intrigued. He wasn’t scared, he prodded on, step-by-step he was deceived. (Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”)
The winding trails within the cave were damp and sent a chill. The giant, who thought that he knew best, was lost and stubborn still.
And then he fell and tumbled down, into a deep-dug pit. As hard as the giant tried to escape, he fell short and had to sit. (Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”)
He knew he couldn’t do it—save himself from this fear. He had to call out for help, to the One who is always near. (Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”)
As he sat, he felt the warmth from a light up above. It shone so bright, he closed his eyes—his heart had filled with love. (Isaiah 65:1 “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.”)
Out of his pit he was lifted up, no longer filled with hate. Who had come to save him—it was Jesus, our redeeming grace. (Matthew 7:8 “For anyone who asks, receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”)
The giant started out for home, a new journey he would begin. Through the saving love of Christ, the giant was free from his sin. (1 Peter 1:23 “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.”)
He told his neighbors and other folks how not to be deceived. No longer scary to his friends, he was now the giant who believed. (1 John 3:23 “And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.”)
