In the last three lessons we learned that the act of praise brings power and with it comes the knowledge of responsibility. Then we felt the loneliness of making hard choices and asked for God to come to us and help. It seems like a reasonable request, after all we are seeking His will in our lives, but finding spiritual answers in the physical world requires action in the presence of doubt.
Evil men act as if the Lord doesn't see what they do, but we WANT Him to find us, to teach us and bring comfort to the weak and humble. We were told that He has given us the power to be heard. That is a great gift but doubt is the fuel that feeds our fear and God does not come running when we cry out like a mother to her babe. He does not strike down the wicked and reward the just as fast as we think He might. This lesson is about action and thus we come to today's psalm about what to do in the face of doubt.
11. Fear No Evil
The Lord has my trust; there is no need to hide from trouble, or run away to someplace safe. The enemy looks strong, and liars are everywhere, aiming to take us in day and night. What can we do if the truth has no effect?
There is no need to worry, from where the Lord sits He sees everything and nothing goes unnoticed.
He tests us in our doubt but gives us enough strength to find the right path. The wicked and violent are caught by their own weakness and cannot survive the trouble that comes to them.
The Lord is righteous and pours out his strength upon those who follow Him.
In our cycle of three, we treat this lesson as how to act. It is simply the truth of how things work. If we got past the last lesson and did not abandon the path because of the hurt we took, then we have taken the first step of trust. Trust means you decide to do it even if you don’t like it. If we can do that, if we are able to build on that trust, there is another shortcut here. There is no need to worry… about anything… ever.
Winning is not always about coming in first and getting the prize: all we really need to do is continue doing what we think is right. We won’t live this life forever, thank goodness, but the only way we can fail is to quit. Keeping up the good fight is what winning is.
For the logical person who needs to test the truth lest he be fooled, there is the idea that nothing goes unnoticed. Science knows that all actions leave some imprint on the universe. Reflected light, heat, gravity, magnetic fields, chemicals and other traces are always left behind and are observable and recordable. Emotions can leave scars and influence future actions. The akashic record of all that has ever happened and the Book of Life (Rev. 21:27) are ancient ideas and Jesus taught that not even a sparrow could fall without his father knowing. (Mt. 10:29)
We are tested in our doubt but if we trust in the strength we have been given we will overcome, while the wicked are destroyed by their weakness. This could be the very definition of good and evil: that which survives is good and that which is destroyed is evil. It is certainly true in the Kingdom, but it is not much help in the present where they both seem to be mixed together and are often hard to tell apart. That is why we are here.
It is our job to observe and distinguish between what is worth keeping and what should be thrown out. We may not always be right but that’s okay, we don’t do the keeping and the throwing (except in our own lives) and we’ll get better at it as we go along. What we need in order to do our job is access to the truth and that is the next lesson.
