Had I but known what lurked along the road,
when first my heart committed to its goal
perhaps I would have sought to shed my load;
alas, I added daily to its toll.
When first my heart committed to its goal
my walk with Him had only just begun.
Alas, I added daily to its toll
and, thus, I slowed my journey to the Son.
My walk with Him had only just begun
but things along the road had caught my eye;
and thus I slowed my journey to the Son
not knowing all I saw was Satan's lie.
But things along the road had caught my eye:
small things that seemed so innocent at first.
Not knowing all I saw was Satan's lie
I chose to gather things that were accursed.
Small things that seemed so innocent at first
became the load I knew I could not bear.
I chose to gather things that were accursed;
ignored the Word that could dispel despair.
Oh Lord, the load I knew I could not bear
Is tempting me to take another road.
I'll not ignore what will dispel despair...
Lord, wrap me in Your arms and bear my load.
Lies tempting me to take another road
is only proof that Satan lost the fight.
Alas, I now have shed my heavy load
and walk the straight and narrow in His Light.
Lord, if I had but better understood
perhaps I would have sought to shed my load.
The fruits I bore would then be oh, so good,
had I but known what lurked along the road.

Its sad but true, we all like to take site seeing trips only to find out theres nothing to gain from it. Its easier to trust Him to begin with. Great poem.
