Have you heard of the phrase “coram Deo” before? If so, do you know what it means? The definition of coram Deo is “before the face of God”, or “in the presence of God”. What a rich definition and meaning!
Living coram Deo implies that God is always with us. He is ever watching over us. There is absolutely no place we can go or situation we may find ourselves in that He does not know about. Our God is omnipresent- He is everywhere; and omniscient- He is all knowing. This concept is hard for our minds to comprehend in its fullness. Yet, we can be assured that we live and breathe under the watchful and aware eye of God.
A second component of this phrase has to do with the blessings of God. The Old Testament teaches that when God turns His face towards His people, they will be blessed. God cannot look upon sin for He is a Holy God. His wrath burns against any and all sin. We cannot enter His presence with sin in our lives. He will turn His face away from us to prevent His wrath from destroying us. When we seek and receive cleansing along with forgiveness for our sins, then God can turn His face towards us. As His face shines on us, His blessings flow towards us. His people can then experience His very presence.
Even though God is always with us, He cannot always look upon us with favor, if sin is present in our lives. Living coram Deo means that we are holy and pure before God, that we have sought forgiveness for our sins through the blood of Jesus and that we, His people, have turned from our wicked ways. Living coram Deo will allow us to enter into His Holy sanctuary to worship and abide with Him. Living coram Deo releases the full blessings of God upon our lives.
Today, let us make a resolution to seek His face, to live coram Deo. Indeed, let’s devote ourselves to be a holy people God favors.
“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us.”
Psalms 67:1 (NIV)
