When my wife Imelda and I ask our children, Christine and Paul, to pray for us during our family devotions, we generally need their help. They know that Mom is at times displeased with their behavior. Things can be wild in the next few minutes! Well, I must admit parents also need their kids' patience!
I say this because children sense from experience and from within their heart that their parents are not always right. No one is always right. This is the reason why parents need to be willing to be friends to their children. Friends are truthful to each other and willing to admit mistakes. Children need Dad and Mom who can be together with them and recognize their own need for God.
Perhaps you grew up in a home where you're not friends with your Dad and Mom. It was hard for you to communicate because the family atmosphere was closed. When you had problems and concerns, you felt uncomfortable and inadequate to open up. You probably always felt awkward to talk to your parents. With your own children though, you can be different. Simply be honest and ask God for help.
During our family devotions, I take time to share the things that I ponder in my own heart with my children. In our busy work or lives, it can be all too easy for parents to communicate just the superficial or "routine," like homework to be done, dishes to be washed, floors to sweep etc. Children need to hear what's going on from their parents' heart and mind, too! When parents do share their hearts to their young kids, that will open the door for deeper, friendly communication with them as they grow up.
Many schools have educational field trips during the school year. My wife Imelda has the wonderful opportunity of being able to facilitate school field trips where teachers and children are together outside school. One of the ways parents can be good friends with their children is by going on school field trips with them. By joining their field trips, parents are able to enter their children's world, know their friends, and stay close to the teachers for their overall academic and character development.
Another way of developing friendship with your children is by laughing together with them. At home, I'm usually humorous even amid my busy preoccupations. I could dance, make jokes, and laugh at myself in front of my children. As I show my children that I can laugh at myself, I help them learn to laugh at themselves too! You know, if you can laugh at yourself and with others, you save yourself a lot of heartaches in life! Pray for a sense of positive humor in your home. Let your children remember your laughing together.
Are you a friend to your children? Remember, what you do now will reflect in your children's future and your relationship with them.
