Friends are treasures. The more friends you have the richer your life is. Friendships may not be necessary for your survival. But, your survival could be meaningless without them!
Recently, I've been rediscovering the value of old friendships. I started reconnecting with them. I did have wonderful memories with my old friends, but a long time has passed between us. It is only after I made some effort to reconnect that I got the chance to discover again the glittering gems that are in them. Each friend represents a particular world. That world was born sometime ago. It was because of that experience of friendship that a world was born.
However, reconnecting with old friends isn't enough. I need to learn a few things to benefit from rediscovered friendships. Here are a few of them.
One is the matter of differences. Some things I used to know about my old friends are gone and they're different now. Normally, birds of the same kind flock together. So, would these new-found differences be an impediment to our continuing our friendship? At first, I felt they might be irritants, but I later realized that they can be good! Although our common memories and similarities unite us, it is our present differences that we learn from -- seeds of an enriching, lasting friendship.
Another thing I learn is the matter of humility. My old friends became my friends when we were still very young, living carefree lives. Society oftentimes pressure us to be engrossed with our own imagined magnificence. Such a self-centered, conceited attitude is surely no recipe for reconnecting with old friends. I did learn to be myself and give my old friends the grace of unconditional acceptance.
The truth is, I made some enemies among my old friends! I remember when we were young how hurt they could had been with insensitive remarks coming from me. I need grace and forgiveness myself. I'm more careful now. I desire for us to be together again, so I don't wait for them to be friendly. I take the first step. As long as I communicate to them in a caring, thoughtful way, we'd be able to enjoy rediscovering our friendship.
I thank God I rediscovered the value of friendships. Friends do need nurturing. They must be maintained. Care is to friends as sunshine is to flowers. One of the
mistakes I can make is to forget that my friends will die someday. The greatest good I can do for them is not just to share our memories and times together, but also to reveal to them, my own treasures.
