So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” John 11:14-15 NIV
Since the disciples did not understand what Jesus said to them, He needed to plainly tell them that Lazarus was dead.
I am guessing the disciples may have wondered why they were going to Judea if Lazarus was dead. Was paying final respects more important than possible danger from those searching for Jesus? The disciples had no idea what Jesus was going to do.
The disciples should have known something was forthcoming as Jesus told them He is glad that they had not been there so they might believe. If they had arrived before Lazarus died it would have been expected that Christ would have healed His beloved friend. But now the man was dead. And Jesus had a miracle ready of which the disciples had never seen before.
Is not our Lord amazing with all that He does? He knows what is best for each of us, and He provides accordingly. Praise be to our God!
