GOD/man OF COMPASSION
Freelance writer Lupie Riley
Thought: When was the last time you exercised the deed of compassion? It could have been towards a hurting friend, a homeless person or a family member. Webster defines it as sympathetic and merciful. The 70’s brought into the world a “me first” mindset. Compassion for another person went out the back door and a narcissistic attitude of “if it feels good do it” permeated the mainstream of humanity. What the world needs now is for compassion to come back into mankind’s thinking and actions.
God’s word is full of stories about compassion. The prodigal son comes to mind with a father welcoming home his son with open arms of love, forgiveness and celebration. His beloved son had come home, repentive and humbled out of a world of sin. I think of the good Samaritan who went the extra mile for a stranger, a victim of violence when others passed by the wounded man without even a second glance. But the ultimate demonstration of compassion was shown as Jesus hung on the cross, bleeding and in excruciating pain. His words to those who were responsible for his crucifixion was “FATHER FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO”. Jesus three years of ministry involved hundreds of occasions where compassion was put into action. The healing of the blind, the maimed and sick, the demon possessed and the feeding of thousands with a few loaves of bread and fish, the saving of the adulteress woman and raising Lazareth and a child from the dead -- the list goes on and on. The Word tells us if everything Jesus said and did could be written down there would not be enough books to contain it all. Our God/man is a God of love and compassion, the kind that our present world could us allot more of. Maranatha
Prayer: Father God, teach me your ways and give me a heart of compassion for others. I want to be better then I was yesterday and move on to the time when I will see you as you are and not stand ashamed. Amen
Verse: Col. 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
