It’s the law.
“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
For every man shall bear his own burden (Galatians 6:2-5 KJV).”
Yes, I live under grace; I’m no longer bound by legalism. Yet, I have a desire to fulfill the law of Christ; I want to bear the burdens of the weary. Multitudes are weighed down by their problems. The proverbial straw might not break their back but it could break their spirit. Christ wants his followers to lift one another through encouragement and prayer. We have the responsibility and opportunity to lighten each other’s loads.
Does this conflict with each bearing his own burdens?
I don’t believe it does. According to teaching that I’ve heard, burdens in the first instance were excessive. The latter was a normal load to carry. As an example, a homemaker is a stay at home mom of 3 young children. She is tired at the end of the day but able to rest and go through her daily routines. In contrast, a woman who is a single parent might work all day in a dead end job and come home to her 3 youngsters. They need supper, baths and tenderness. She is in desperate need of a burden bearer.
It’s the law. It is love.
