PUT ON HIS YOKE
Jesus did not use the world marketing skill to draw people into the kingdom of God. When He called men unto Himself, He often said, "Enter through the narrow gate", "deny yourself", "carry your cross", "eat my flesh and drink my blood", "put on my yoke", and many others. Although many people rejected his calls, yet He concentrated on the few who responded.
Jesus said, "All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. 8 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:27-30, KJV)
Yoke is a harsh word. It carries a sense of severe bondage or affliction or subjection. In the ancient time, yoke is a piece of wood fitted on two animals for the purpose of pulling the ploughing the farmland. Yoke is a symbol of servitude. I believe there is a mystery here: Jesus was addressing the less priviledged and the downtrodden. Could He intend to add to their troubles?
Jesus' Authority
... All things have been entrusted to me by my Father...
Here, He said all things have been entrusted unto Him by His Father. All things mean all things - whatever is necessary for life here and hereafter. Wisdom, power, wealth, good health, understanding, eternal destiny and whatever you can think of has been entrusted to the hand of Jesus. He is the supreme authority over all things both on earth and in heaven. By His name the gates of heaven are opened and closed.
That is the truth about Jesus. He is not boasting; He makes the statement so that nobody may confuse you about the reality of things, so that no man may deceive you to think that Jesus is not sufficient for every need of your life, so that you may know where to go for your problem to be solved.
Jesus' Meaning of Yoke
The Lord's intention is to help remove the yoke of this world off your neck and to give you his own yoke. The yoke of this world depresses, burdens and crushes the souls of men; the yoke of Jesus brings rest to the soul of anyone who yields to His invitation.
In the mind of Christ, yoke means at least four things namely, intimacy, acceptance, trust and learning.
Intimacy - A yoke naturally connects two individual animals together in close companionship. The two are under a binding force that prevents one from going away from the other: they must walk at the same speed towards the same direction and destination.
Apostle Paul says, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" (2Corinthians 6:14, KJV) Paul refers to an intimate relationship between two individuals here. Preachers usually use this passage to warn believers from getting into marital relationship with unbelievers. Meanwhile, Jesus expects you to cultivate intimacy with Him, the kind that exists between husband and wife.
Acceptance - In the mind of Christ, yoke means acceptance. In the context of relationship, to accept means to willingly receive and accommodate everything the other person stands for. It means to welcome every demand the Lord places upon your life, not to be fed up of Him in every situation. Jesus warns, "And a blessing will be on him who has no doubts about me." (Matthew 11:6, BBE) or "And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."(KJV)
Trust - To trust is to fully depend on Him. It is to believe and put your faith in Him. It is to risk your life for Him counting on all His promises to fulfill. The Bible says, "Peter answered him, “Lord, if it’s you, order me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come on!” So Peter got down out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came to Jesus (Matthew 14:28-29, ISV). The Lord expects you to trust Him for all things.
Learning - The yoke of Jesus means readiness to learn from Him. Jesus is the custodian of all knowledge and He is the truth personified. Anyone who desires to live a pleasing life before God must learn from Him. He had received approval from the Father to be the head of all. He is the example of what man ought to be. The Bible says, "While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” (Matthew 17:5, WEB) The purpose of listening is to learn.
His Yoke Brings Rest
The Lord's intention is to help remove the yoke of this world off your neck and to give you his own yoke. The yoke of this world depresses, burdens and crushes the souls of men; the yoke of Jesus brings rest to the soul of anyone who yields to His invitation.
The yoke of Jesus gives you the right orientation and correct direction with Jesus; it brings stability to your journey. The yoke of this world brings depression and drags a man to a particular destination - destruction in hell. The yoke of Jesus offers total deliverance from the yoke of this world; you will be free from every curse, and principle of this world once you accept the yoke of Jesus.
The yoke of Jesus brings rest. The truth is once you accept His yoke, your load and burden will become His; your concerns also become His concerns. Peter says, "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1Peter 5:7, KJV) Jesus is a compassionate Jesus, He is gentle and meek. He will never drive your life to destruction. If you put on His yoke, you will find rest until you fully fulfill God purpose for your life. Stay blessed!
