At this time in the Bible, Jesus is born in the small town of Bethlehem in Judea and the Wise Men were following the star across the bare land to see the King of the Jews. They made one mistake and that was stopping in King Herod’s land to ask “Where the baby was?”
This question upset King Herod and he was furious that none of his religious leaders could give him an answer to the question of “Where is the baby?” The Wise Men continued onward and following the star toward the baby. When they finally got to the place where the baby was, they got down on their knees to worship the new born King. They presented gifts to the baby and worshipped his birth.
They decided to start early the next morning on their journey back home and before they got too far into their travels, they decide to stop to tell King Herod where the baby was. King Herod had lied to the Wise Men and told them when they found the baby to let him know where the baby was. He lied about wanted to worship the baby and to bring him presents.
As they lay on top of the straw, an angel of the Lord warned them to go back to their hometown by another route because King Herod really wanted to kill the baby instead of worship him. Early in the morning, the Wise Men rose and followed the angel’s warning. They returned home by another route which made King Herod even madder when he found out.
This is the point that King Herod called out his soldiers and told them to go around to cities and kill all the young boys two years and under. Just think of what emotions would be going through new parents as they watch their little boys being killed by Roman soldiers. They probably wanted to kill the King and the soldiers with their bare hands. The parents would pick up the little boys’ limp body and carry it to the graves made for their bodies. The parents would be wailing in protest of the unfairness of what had happened to their children. The parents would know that King Herod had ordered their little boys to be murder because he was jealous of the newborn King of the Jews.
The angel didn’t stop there with its warnings because it also warns Joseph to get up in the middle of the night and take his wife plus their newborn baby to another part of this land. A part, so far away that King Herod and his soldiers couldn’t find the newborn baby to kill him. Joseph did exactly that as he got up in the middle of the night to get his little family to safety. They traveled by the cover of night, so that the Roman soldiers that they passed wouldn’t see them since they would blend into the shadows.
