Stuart remembered that the next time never came because his dad had come home totally drunk to many nights. His dad had been mad about something when he got home and then he had a fight with his wife who decided that she had enough of not having money to buy food, clothes, or anything that the two of them needed.
His dad came home that night from work and was talking in hushed voice with Louise, his wife in the kitchen. They came into his bedroom where he was studying and said “Stuart, we need to talk to you.” Stuart wasn’t sure what this was all about because they had never come into his room to talk to him. He slowly put his pencil down and knew that he probably wouldn’t like this conversation.
“I had to arrest Ted’s father today.”
In a hushed voice, Stuart asked “Why?’
He watched as his parents looked at each other before his dad looked back at him. He replied “I don’t have good news for you today. “ Pausing, he wiped away the tears that seemed to roll silently down his checks and Stuart knew this was the first time that he had seen his dad crying.
“Dad, you are scaring me!”
“Ted’s dad came home drunk and started beating his wife when Ted jumped on his dad’s back. His dad stumbled backward and fell down a flight of stairs with Ted on his back.” Pausing again, Stuart knew that his dad was having a hard time telling him about what happened to Ted. “I hate to say this ,but I want you to know from us before you hear it from someone else. When they hit the bottom, Ted’s head hit the cement and cracked open. The doctors tried to save him ,but it was not use.”
“Are you saying that Ted is dead?”
“Yes, the mother is a state of shock, she just sits there like she is watching the whole ugly scene replay over and over in her mind’s eye. Ted’s father is a hapless state because when the accident happened. It was like instant sobering up to him. He is sitting in a cell down at the jail rocking back and forth. He wouldn’t speak, eat, or lie down. The doctors think that the parents went over the edge when the accident claimed Ted’s life.”
“No, you are lying, I knew that his father was beating him and I wanted to tell you. Ted made me promise that I wouldn’t tell anyone about the beating. I made him promise that the next time it happened, we were going to tell you. The next time will never come. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO, you are lying.” Tears started to flow freely out of Stuart’s eyes and he flung himself at his dad who had his arms open and waiting for him. His dad sat there rocking back and forth holding his crying son and wishing that he indeed was lying about what had happened tonight. He would give anything for the situation never to happen. He knew deep down that his son was hurting badly since Ted had been his best friend. The next words out of his son’s mouth surprised him into speechlessness.
“I want to see his dad. I want to ask him why he had to come home drunk? I want to ask him why he hated Ted enough to do this to him?”
“I am sorry, Ted. I can’t let you do that because right now, Ted’s father is not in good shape and he is on the suicide watch. I am very sorry, son I can’t let you see his dad right now.”
They stayed with him for awhile until he said that he wanted to be alone and he just wanted to lie down on the bed. As they walked out of his room, they stopped in the doorway to look back at him and he was facing away from the door. He knew that they were standing there just watching him. He wanted them to leave him alone ,so that he could cry again like a little baby.
Thoughts crashed through his mind at a considerable fast pace such as “Why did his dad hate Ted ,so much?”, “Why didn’t his mother just take him somewhere that was safe?” He knew that there would be a lot of unanswered question that he just couldn’t understand. He finally heard the door shut and he rolled on his back to look at the ceiling in his bedroom. He lied there awhile before he asked quietly “Why God Why?” Why did it have to be Ted and not the school bully at school who would pick on Ted when he was at school. His dad would pick on him when he was at home and the school bully would pick on him at school. Well, neither of them had anyone to pick on since Ted was up in Heaven with his Father who he was always talking about.
“His Heavenly Father protected him from his earthly father.” is statements that he heard over and over. Stuart had asked Ted one day after school “Who is your Heavenly Father? I thought the man married to your mother was your real father?” Ted just would smile at him and mutter something about one day that he would understand. Stuart sat up in bed and yelled “I don’t understand at all.”
He heard his parents coming running toward his bedroom door and they politely asked if he was fine. His dad sat down on the bed and asked him if he wanted to talk about what had happened.
Stuart looked at his father and said “Ted was always telling me that one day I would understand about how his Heavenly Father had protected him from his earthly father. Did you know that Ted sneaked out of his own home to go to church to learn about this Heavenly Father. Why didn’t his Heavenly Father save him this time and make it that his dad’s head was cracked open? Why? Why?”
