Prayers
Praying to be Sanctified Entirely
The Apostle Paul Prayed a Prayer for the Church at Thessalonica and said;
Now may the God of peace Himself SANCTIFY YOU ENTIRELY; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (v. 23)
Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NAS)
The Apostle Paul wrote this Prayer on purpose so we may Pray it for ourselves and we may also Pray it on behalf of others as an intercessory Prayer. Remember every Prayer that Paul wrote was by design so we may learn how to Pray for things specifically and not second guess whether or not we should Pray in this manner. Paul did an amazing job of keeping us informed about many things as Believers and what we should practice.
Removing Religious Clichés
If you’ve been around Church people who have religious lingos you probably heard immature believers say, “I’m saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost.” More often than not, after some observation I would witness that they don’t know what they are saying and they are surely not living up to being what they say. I’m not judging, I’m simply seeing something else from what they claim to be. They say they are filled with the Holy Ghost implying that they are Baptized in the Holy Ghost—yet, I never heard them speak in unknown tongues.
I say this respectfully, you don’t have to go around and claim things, if you are truly a holy man or woman of God people will know it. Now, in order for us to understand the topic of Sanctification or being Sanctified we need to read what Jesus and Paul said about the topic.
It’s true that by faith in Jesus Christ we are spiritually Sanctified by His Blood (Hebrews 13:12 NKJV). We are also spiritually washed, sanctified and justified (1 Corinthians 6:11 NKJV) according to Paul’s teaching. Yet, Paul Prayed that God would continue to Sanctify us Entirely and preserve us blameless until Jesus returns. Now, if we say we are Saved, Sanctified—spiritually it’s true. Yet, we still must Pray that God would Sanctify us Entirely because we have many areas in our lives that still needs to be cleaned up.
Let me share what the Amplified Bible says, and may the God of peace Himself Sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).
Faithful is He Who is calling you [to Himself] and utterly trustworthy, and He will also do it [fulfill His call by hallowing and keeping you]. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 AMP)
I shared the Amplified translation to give you a better understanding of what Paul actually meant by writing this Prayer. Now, let me outline it for you to see the Divine purpose of Praying this Prayer.
1. We must be Sanctified through and through
2. Separated from profane things
3. So we can purely whole-heartedly serve God and be consecrated to Him
4. So our entire being spirit, soul and body may be sound and complete while we are serving God on earth.
5. Until He returns
6. We may be wondering how this may happen? Or would it happen if we Pray this Prayer
7. Paul said, Jesus is faithful to make sure that the calling He has on your life will be fulfilled as He is Sanctifying and keeping you. Hallowing means making you holy in areas that must be cleaned up.
Sanctifying Us by His Word
Aside from Praying to be Sanctified another great way for us to be Sanctified is by the Word of God. Jesus taught this and so did Paul. (See John 17:17-19 NKJV/ Ephesians 5:25-27 NKJV)
By reading the Word of God over and over it will provide us the needed instruction to be informed and inspired to apply the Christian principles we need to live by so we may be recognized as holy people instead of proclaiming that we are something we are not living up too. I find that the biggest problem in Christianity is the lack of knowledge of God’s Word when it comes to believers. We don’t get the Word inside of us enough to generate challenges that will cause us to change and become the Man and woman of God that God called us to be.
Since, I caught a revelation of this Prayer in Thessalonians years ago I’ve been Praying it for myself and over the years I’ve seen God clean me up in areas that I thought was impossible to clean up. I don’t want to do the things that I use to do. I don’t want to make illegal money, go to the night clubs and pick up a hot looking babe and have sex. I don’t care about keeping up with the Jones’ as they say. I’m happy with my lifestyle right now. God causes us to learn to be content with a little or a lot and then gives us the right mind-set to appreciate it regardless to what others may think or criticizes us about.
As long as we Pray for God to Sanctify us entirely we will eventually come to that place where HE wants us to be in our walk of faith as we trust HIM to bring it to pass, Amen.
