Serving With Attitude Not Purpose
Luke 10:38-42
Luke 10:40 Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? (NLT)
I was never a huge fan of tennis, but on the occasion when I watched a match, I enjoyed the antics of John McEnroe-former world number one tennis player. Attitude must have been his middle name. He served, missed, lost and won with an attitude. When he disagreed with an umpire or made a stupid mistake, he often responded with unmentionable epithets or by hurling his racket to the ground. He put on a good attitude.
Step back almost two thousand years and we find someone else who served with an attitude. We are not told of many close friends Jesus had, but Mary, Martha and Lazarus from Bethany were three. They were siblings with a different perspective on life. Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead, and the little family had thrown a party in Jesus’ honor. Lazarus reclined at the table, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and Martha served with an attitude.
No one made Martha throw the party or serve. It was her idea and her nature. But serving with an attitude of disgust, jealousy, or for recognition destroys the meaning of the moment. Imagine her in the kitchen looking at her brother and sister doing nothing. She begins to fume; Why am I having to do everything?
Satan subtly tricked Martha. He directed her focus from the reason she was serving to the unfairness factor. So Martha forgot her purpose and served with anger and bitterness. He will do the same for us if we let him. God desires our service to him and others be carried out with graciousness, love, tenderness and mercy. Anything less lessens the meaning of the act.
Prayer: Father when I serve You and others, let me remember I am serving because I have been served by You on Calvary.
