It is hard to
accept certain situations
We say that things are not fair
and wonder how this could happen to us
These thoughts make
it difficult to dance
Sometimes, we need to accept
The things we can’t control
Scary? Oh yes,
but not as frightening
as becoming so overwhelmed with life that
we become emotionally paralyzed
So, let your body flow
with whatever happens today
Let your inner self whisper
All is well . . .
All will be well . . .
Reflections
Acceptance is hard. For many of us, it may mean losing control or feeling helpless. It is actually just the opposite. Does this mean that with every challenge we should sit back and let whatever upsets us continue or get worse? Of course not. Think of it as the weather. We have no control over weather conditions, but we can put on a coat, or turn on the air conditioner. We accept the weather, but we also do whatever is necessary to cope with it.
Some situations require action, while others may correct themselves. For example, if we hear rumors that there will be lay-offs at work, will it help to worry all day? Again, of course not. We may have to accept that probably there will be layoffs, but we need to focus on the job we are doing today. Is it natural to worry? Yes, it is. But it won’t help us solve the immediate challenge. If you are an author who is waiting to hear from a publisher will the answer come any faster by becoming frustrated? No. You have to accept that they have to read many manuscripts, and yours is not the only one.
One of the hardest things to accept is our own weakness. We each have an ego which prevents our caring for others and causes us only to look out for ourselves. Many times, we are so focused on doing our next task that we miss what is going on with those around us. We are using them for our own purposes. Once you realize that you, too, have an ego, you can be more mindful of your actions and be understanding of others.
Your ego wants to make yourself the main issue—you’ll be looking out only for number one. It helps if you can laugh at yourself and say, “Oh, there I go again.” Try and focus on the concerns and needs of others, and understand what they are trying to say.
What are some of the things you need to accept today? Do they need action? How can you handle them so they don’t cause stress and worry. Look at nature and how our Creator provides for other creatures. Watch children and how they often accept situations better than adults. Be mindful of living for the present moment. What is before you right now? Wake up, and see!
