Calm like Peter? SHAKES HER HEAD IN DISBELIEF That is a sentence I thought I would never speak about my husband.. Impetuous like Peter. Impulsive like Peter. Foot in the mouth like Peter. But calm is a word I never would have used to describe my husband.
Now, Jesus–that word could certainly have been used about Him. I remember when Peter told me about the incredible storm he and the other disciples feared would take their lives.
And for an experienced fisherman like my husband to be afraid in a storm–well, my mind coud not even comprehend how severe that storm had to have been.
He told me, “We looked for Jesus, and he was ASLEEP in the stern of the boat! We wake him and cry, “Lord, don’t you care if we drown?”
Peter and his friends were anything but calm. And then Peter tells me how Jesus calmed the tumultuous sea with just the words, “Peace be still!”
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm, and he said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” Mark 4: 39-40 ESV.
Jesus was calm, He made the sea be calm, but Peter and his friends were anything but calm. Who was this Jesus that even the wind and waves obeyed him?
Calm like Peter? Not really.
And there was the time when my own faith and trust in Jesus were tested. My Peter was arrested! Herod had already arrested and killed James, and would no doubt do the same to my Peter.
I couldn’t sleep at all that night. I prayed and wept. And then that night I heard footsteps and a familiar voice say, “Miss me?”
Peter!
After a long, prolonged hug, Peter finally pulled away so he could have enough breath to tell me the story.
He told me, “I had expected to be executed the next day. I considered it an honor to die for Jesus. I go to sleep between two soldiers, bound in chains. Next thing I know, an angel wakes me by striking me on the side.”
As Peter continued telling his incredible story, I had him put his arm around me so that I could feel him and be assured he wasn’t a ghost or a dream.
The most incredible part of the story to me was not that an angel rescued Peter. But that my impetuous husband was able to have such peace in Herod’s dungeon that he fell ASLEEP! Just like Jesus in the stern of the boat!
But I wasn’t really surprised. I had seen such a change in my Peter. To be calm required faith and trust.
Calm like Peter?
No. Not really.
Calm like Jesus.
