Just leave me alone! That was something that I would sometimes shout at my parents before stomping off to my room.
Such a desire was momentary, and I soon rejoined the family, secretly glad they hadn’t left me.
But I remember
When I have felt bereft
For everyone had left me.
Deep loneliness would chill my soul.
And I think of a woman who knew what it was like to experience such loneliness and witness it in her son. I wonder what it would have been like to be Mary, mother of Jesus.

I remember when I felt
Bereft
For everyone had left
Me
Nobody believed me. Not even Joseph. That was the most painful abandonment. No one was left who believed me. I was left all alone–or so I thought. But God didn’t leave me bereft.
He sent an angel to Joseph to persuade him. And Joseph believed! And I was no longer left alone. And yet Joseph couldn’t quite understand what I was going through. In some ways, I still felt alone.
And then I went to see Elizabeth, who knew what it was like to be left alone by all the other women in the village who didn’t believe her story. “Pregnant? At your age?” they would scoff.
I so looked forward to sharing my story with Elizabeth, for I knew she would believe me. But I never anticipated the words that came out of her mouth as soon as I entered her home.
She said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”Luke 1:42-45 NIV.
Blessed is she who has believed. I do believe Jehovah, thank you for the honor of choosing me.
What really breaks a mother’s heart is watching her son be abandoned by all his friends. As if it wasn’t already shredding my mother’s heart to see Jesus on the cross, but to see almost all of his disciples had left him. Only John was left.
But my precious boy, in the midst of his suffering, in the midst of his loneliness, thought of me.
He said to me, “Woman, behold your son,” and then to John, “Behold your mother.” John 19:23 NKJV.
Jesus, making sure I would not be left alone.
Jesus making sure none of us followers would be left alone. He sent his Holy Spirit.

Jesus made sure we would never be left alone
I remember when I felt
Bereft
For everyone had left
Me
But now I am reminded
Of truth to which I was blinded
Of loneliness I can declare myself free
For Jesus lives in me.
