The cross, rough-hewn and bloody
partitions, segregates, and splits
flesh from spirit
soul from intention.
Before its miraculous work,
striving, fleeting, acceptance ruled.
Not grace, but earned favour
with a God who demands perfection,
was required.
But my sin, my lack, remained.
Cleansing water, ritual, sacrifice
stemmed the verdict of death for
but a fleeting moment.
However, the stench of sin,
masked for a breath,
lingered on the tongue,
left to claim its victim.
With no promise of extinction,
the list of offences
etched for eternity
endured despite all my efforts.
THEN THE CROSS
After its miraculous work
rest, embrace, and mercy now rules.
Grace, not human effort,
the gift from the true God
who is light and love.
My sin, my lack, erased.
Cleansing blood, perfect sacrifice
in my place has conquered death
forever.
The stench of sin has fled.
Defeated, denied its power,
sin cannot remain under
His blood
I now cling to His promises.
No list of offences exist.
I am etched for eternity
in His hands.
I love the ancient scraggy symbol
that divides my life.
