Cautiously slipping out of the cover of the brush, she headed for the fence. She passed through the fence with ease. The giant form of the great livestock guard dog lay snoring heavily. She sprang over him silently. Now she approached the back of the stable. She could hear the soft bleating of the mother goat in answer to the uncontrolledly loud bleating of the newborns who had not learned how to use their voices very well yet.
The fox flinched each time the little kids bleated so loudly, afraid someone else might wake up. Suddenly, the mother goat caught a whiff of something off. She snorted in warning, sounding something like she was sneezing or blowing her nose. It was now or never, thought the fox. Her own kits were at home, hungry as ever.
The fox slunk around the corner, then rushed towards the nearest of the kids. There were three of them. Triplets. Born a little early and small, by the look of them. The little one screamed a piercing cry. The mother goat charged, horns lowered, hooves stomping. The fox chickened out. She fled back the way she had come. This time, the dog was awake and coming towards her barking.
Terror seized her as the space between them shrank. With a giant leap, she sprang nimbly over the bulky dog, squeezed through the fence, and scuttled into the woods. She would have to look for a rabbit to pick up for her hungry kits.
Meanwhile, the mother goat snorted half at the fleeing fox, and half at the dog’s late arrival to the scene. Realizing his mistake, the dog yawned sleepily and turned to patrol the barnyard premises.
