My sister, Bonnie, and I longed for oversight for Grace but having no contacts in Kenya we resorted to praying for God to protect her as we wired her monthly salary to Charles, the father of her daughter. He was the only contact of hers that had a Kenyan ID required for Western Union pick-up. We eventually learned about Mobile Wallet and were able to send the salary directly to Grace’s phone, bypassing Charles.

Four years later, however, circumstances revealed that what we feared could happen—had happened. Receiving money from us had put Grace in danger.

Grace made an impulsive trip to Uganda for her grandmother’s burial. While she was there, Charles sent me a flood of emails with conflicting accusations against Grace, claiming she was pregnant and telling lies about him.

Shocked, I emailed Grace, Are you pregnant?

She replied, I'm not pregnant . . . You remember that day he took my phone? He beat me so badly but I couldn't tell you. He withdraws every penny in my account. He said when I go back to Kenya, he will slaughter me, and even he doesn't want Loice anymore.

Bonnie and I urged her to stay in Uganda and told her we could no longer financially support her in Kenya—when it put her in danger! We hoped to find a better way to support her in Uganda.

However, Grace returned to Kenya. Her emails, with their broad hints of financial distress, left Bonnie and me in a spiritual dilemma. Give money to enable Grace to remain in an untenable situation or disobey the Lord’s admonition to give when asked.

Bonnie is especially sympathetic to Grace being an orphan. We believe she needs on-the-ground mentoring to oversee our support. For years, Bonnie has supported Amazima in Jinja, Uganda—a ministry providing education for children and discipleship. Bonnie wrote them asking for a contact for someone to come alongside Grace, help her get settled into housing and a church and eventual training for work opportunities. We would provide all financial needs.

An email from Grace had me wrestling with the Lord, in tears: When I start begging, I'm sure I'll be laughed at. Like today when Loice came from school, she said she was very hungry . . .

While I begged God to provide for Grace, Bonnie phoned to say Amazima had passed her request forward to HEAL Ministries—a ministry in Jinja, Uganda reaching out to vulnerable women and children, with job training available.

I think we can help Grace, the email declared. A rescue! Overwhelming joy! Tears of thankfulness! God was opening a secure way for us to continue supporting Grace.

A long zoom call gave clarity about what Grace needed and what HEAL Ministries could provide. A perfect fit. Bonnie was preparing to write Grace the good news when Grace sent me a shocking email.

She confessed to having hidden her pregnancy and needing financial help because she had a two-month-old baby boy. Mummy, if you can support me in any way, I'll appreciate it. I surrender all to God because he holds my future and knows all about me.

I was appalled at the months of deception, but Bonnie’s compassion for orphans kicked in immediately.

Dear HEAL Ministries, Bonnie emailed, Surprise! Grace has a five-year-old AND a two-month-old baby. Can we still move forward with the plans for Grace?

Absolutely, was the reply from www.heal-ministries.

But Grace was afraid of Uganda’s extreme poverty, worse than Kenya’s.

I want to stay in Kenya where there is more opportunity. But life has become very difficult for me because I failed to control myself. I feel so guilty and ashamed of myself. I don't know how I'll get out of my mess. Please Mummy kindly help me.

Dear Grace, At least 10 times we told you we can no longer financially support you in Kenya. Is it Kenya or Uganda?

A month later Grace arrived in Jinja with her two children and was met with gracious open arms. Our financial support now has HEAL’s oversight. She is living in a house with a toilet, a fridge, a stove—things she never had before. She’s attending a vibrant church with a ministry to single moms. Loice is loving school and Grace will soon be studying to become a teacher—childcare for baby George provided by HEAL. God’s love in action!
