I am Hagar. But my name never passed the lips of my owners Abraham and Sarai. Look in your Bible they always referred to me as a slave, not worthy of a name.
But my name was spoken and not in anger or disgust or scolding.
Do you know who spoke my name?
(SAYS SLOWLY AND WITH EMPHASIS) The Angel of the Lord. Not just once but TWICE!
The first time, I’ll admit I had been foolish. Sarah couldn’t get pregnant so she gave me to Abraham. And foolishly I flaunted my pregnancy in front of her. Nameless slave, hah! I had done something she couldn’t.
And I paid the price for my foolishness. Abused by Sarah until I couldn’t take any more, I fled. Into the wilderness, with no water… My doom was sure. But then the Angel of the Lord spoke to me To me, a nameless slave.
“Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” Gen16: 8
The Angel of the Lord knew my name?
And I, nameless slave of Sarah, gave a name to God, El Roi. “for I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13
And then came the time when Sarah said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son, Isaac”. Gen 21:10. “That woman”. Once again, I’m the nameless slave.
And my son and I are sent off with some food and a skin of water. To wander in the Desert of Beersheba. To die of thirst. Or so I thought.
Until once again I heard my name,
“What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid, God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Genesis 21:17. NIV
The One who mattered knew my name.
And so I say to you:
God sees you
God loves you
He knows your name
Of this I’m sure
Of this I will proclaim
I will never be the same
For the God of the universe
Calls me by name
