I know what some of you are experiencing. I believe you say (SAYS SLOWLY LIKE A FOREIGN LANGUAGE) that you put yourself down. You want MORE. To do more, to be more, but you’re just…you.
I know how you feel. I used to feel that same way.
I always wanted MORE. To do more, to be more..but I was just… Tabitha.
I loved to hear stories about the women of the past: Deborah, Ruth, Queen Esther. They did so much. They were so much more than anything I could ever be. For I was just…Tabitha.
What could I do? I couldn’t be a judge or a queen. Just the thought of being a queen made me laugh.
And then I think, maybe, just maybe I could be a Ruth. She was a friend to Naomi, and worked hard to provide food for her. I looked around and saw women in need, childless widows with no one to support them. No one to love them.
For even if I didn’t know how to be a queen or a judge, the one thing I knew was how to sew. And I saw these widows so in need of clothes, so in need of love.
I had plenty of both. When I made a tunic and gave it to one of my widows, I would whisper in her ear, “When you wear it, remember, it’s a hug from me.” And I thought about Jesus and how He loved lus so much, I would add, “and it’s a hug from Jesus.”
I loved my ladies so much. I just wished I could do more, be more. But I was just..Tabitha.
And then I got sick. I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want to be a bother. They had more important things to do, more important people to worry about.
And then I laid down one day, and when I woke up. I realized I was in heaven. And there was Jesus! He tenderly took my hand and said, “Well done, my good and faithful Tabitha. But I have more for you to do. It’s not your time.”
Not my time? I was so glad to be with Jesus, but I did miss my ladies, who would help them? Was I was going to have the privilege of doing more? Even though I was just..Tabitha?.
And then from afar I heard a voice say, “Tabitha, arise.”
And the very next moment,I knew I was no longer in heaven. I opened my eyes, and there was Peter! And next thing you know I’m surrounded by my precious widows, their cheeks still wet with tears, laughing in disbelief, hugging me so hard I could barely breathe. But I didn’t mind.
And I found that I was more than just Tabitha. The story of my being raised from the dead became known throughout all of Joppa. And more importantly, God used it to bring many to Himself.
I had always wanted to do more, to be more, to be more than just Tabitha. But it wasn’t just Peter telling me to arise. It was Jesus. I realized I was being called to arise from the low esteem I had put myself. I didn’t need to do more. I didn’t need to be more. I was the Tabitha God created me to be, and I was not only awoken from death but from that delusion.
(SPEAKS TO AUDIENCE)
And so I say to each of you,
Arise!
