A throaty growl reverberated from her beak. Love for her chicks shown in her red eyes. No one would harm them while she lived.
Her tone softened as one of her little ones peaked its little head out over her wing.
“Cheep!”
“Baak Baak!”
Then the mother hen heard another voice. The two-legged, pole-armed monster looking down on her held a box with small holes cut in it. The patter of tiny feet sounded on the bottom of the box. Shrill voices cried out in distress.
“Cheeeep!” cried the voices so high and piecing the monster squinted at the sound.
“Buk buk buk” The hen raised her head at the sound of chicks in distress.
The monster reached one of its huge hands into the box and lifted out a chick. The mother hen called all the more to it. With great care, the monster folded itself down to set the chick before the mother. The hen spoke with all the fervor she could muster, calling it to get under her for safety and warmth.
Yet the little chick just stood there, looking up confused at the moving, clucking thing above it. What did the sound mean? It could not understand. One of the hen’s own chicks crept out to see the new comer. Called by its mother, it scurried back under the hen.
The poor mother could not understand why the little fluff ball before her did not come to her call. Cluck as she might, the little one payed no attention.
At last, instinct told the chick it should hide under something for warmth. It followed the other chick under the hen. Such wonderful warmth and softness surrounded it. This was where it belonged.
One by one, the monster set the chicks before the mother hen. Though she called to them, they did not understand. But her own chicks, hatched beneath her, knew her voice as the sheep know the voice of their shepherd.
In time, the adopted chicks learned the voice of their mother as well as her own young. She took care of them, leading them out to explore the world outside of the coup and in to the safety of home. Any ruthless fellow who dared look at the chicks wrong found out that the mother hen was not all fluff! No, she could strike very hard with her beak and claws. Like a whirlwind of motherly fury, she launched herself at any danger to her chicks. She called the chicks under her, protecting them with her own life.
Generations of young chicks were raised by the dear Miss Broody. At last, she gave her life to protect them from danger. She breathed her last and was no more.
Jesus knew very well the frustration of a hen whose chicks did not hear her voice. Matthew 23:37 KJV “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” Though the people of the world do not hear His voice, those of His children who come to Him, He cares for unfailingly.
As the mother hen who loved her chicks so much that she died to protect them, Jesus gave His life to save us. Jesus did not stay dead as the hen who ceased to be, however. He rose again to give them new life and new hope.
Will you heed the voice of the Good Shepherd? His sheep hear His voice, and those who are His He guards and protects. Are you hidden beneath the shelter of His wings?

It reminds me of the stories of foster mothers who have nurtured dozens of children through the years.
