(Chuckling. Gavel hits table)
GOD
Your sense of humour secured your invitation to ST NICK
PRAESENS
Thank you Almighty.
GOD
Futurum.
FUTURUM
Here.
GOD
Nicholas, please sum up how your life on earth is the inspiration for this group.
NICHOLAS OF MYRA
I must say I never meant to start a movement. I just wanted to help out a family in crisis. They lost all their treasure, all that was precious to them in a serious of shipping accidents. The father staked his fortune on a series of trades but every ship he invested in sank leaving the family destitute. Suddenly his three daughters were in danger of being sold off as slaves though each was betrothed to good men. But their dowries were at the botton of the sea.
(General exclamations of shock)
NICHOLAS OF MYRA
(Continues)
I was rich but I never considered the gold precious to me. I longed to serve Almighty with my whole heart. So for three nights in row I snuck into their house and left enough gold in each girls shoe to make up the dowry. They were all married and eventually the father’s company recovered.
GOD
You are a faithful servant, Nicholas. You did not consider the world’s value system as your prize but saw a better way. Truly you are my precious child.
NICHOLAS OF MYRA
My Lord, it is the least I could do. You gave your one and only cherished Son to die in my place. To pay my debt.
PRAETERITUM
That day holds such sorrow. It is still fresh in my mind’s eye.
FUTURUM
My only comfort was my ability to see the third day even as I witnessed the lashes flying from the whip.
PRAESENS
It was truly the worst Earth Day I ever experienced. The was no joy to be found.
GOD
And yet it was the joy set before Him that gave my dearest Son the strength to see it through.
(General murmuring)
GOD
(Continuing)
Now on to the first assignment for ST NICK. There’s a man named Ebenezer Scrooge....
PRAETERITUM
Ebenezer Scrooge! A tight fisted hand at the grindstone!
PRAESENS
Hard and sharp as flint from which no steel has ever struck out generous fire!
FUTURUM
Self contained and solitary as an oyster.
GOD
Yes, but he is dear to me. Praeteritum, what was he like in yesteryear?
PRAETERITUM
A lonely abandoned child.
GOD
My chosen beloved child. Praesens, what is he like today?
PRAESENS
He’s a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!
GOD
Yes, lost, broken, hurting. How I long for him to see how much I love him. How much I paid for him. How much I value him.
(Beat)
Futurum, what does the coming year promise him?
FUTURUM
I see a dark graveyard with a stone etched in his name.
NICHOLAS OF MYRA
Almighty! Ebenezer needs our help!
GOD
Yes.
PRAETERITUM
But what exactly are we to do, Almighty?
GOD
You shall each visit him this night. I shall open portals for you to interact with him. Praeteritum, you shall remind him of his past.
PRAETERITUM
Yes, Almighty. But how?
GOD
By bringing him back to see himself. See his choices. Hear his own words. Praesens.
PRAESENS
Yes, Almighty.
GOD
Your gift is the present is it not?
PRAESENS
The present is my present.
GOD
(Chuckling)
You shall challenge him to see how precious his life is now. How valuable each second of each day is. Futurum.
FUTURUM
My Lord.
GOD
You are the last chance for Ebenezer to change his priorities from temporal dust to eternal glory. Use whatever means necessary.
FUTURUM
I have an idea, Almighty.
GOD
Let’s bring this beloved child back to the Kingdom that does not end. Let’s help him cease storing up treasure on earth and instead focus on treasure that rust and moth cannot destroy! I trust you all to succeed in this your first assignment as our new Strategic Tactical Near Interaction Christmas Krew.
