She peeked into Izzy’s room. She remembered laying out her church clothes on Izzy’s bed and telling her to get dressed after breakfast. The dress clothes were gone. The kitchen and playroom had both been checked. Mother looked at her watch; it was almost time to leave. Marching outside, she called again.
“I’m right here, Mother. I was just saying good morning to Anabel and Mr. Cogbern.” Little Izzy came running from the barn.
“What on earth! Your socks… Where are your shoes? You wore your nice church clothes where? What do you think you’re doing!” Mother grasped the rail of the porch and sat down on the step, lest she should faint.
She looked up and down at her little daughter. Once beautiful, snow white socks were now stained with mud and cow manure. All down the side of her frilly, lacy dress a streak of nasty chicken excretion dripped down. Izzy had obviously been holding Mr. Cogbern, the rooster, when he decided to … um… you know… all down the side of her dress and dripping onto her sock feet.
The whole front of her dress and the sleeves had lost their pastel colored elegance and gained a brown hue. Even the little pink bow in the girl’s hair was smashed and filthy. Apparently, she had given Anabel a hug and rubbed all over that dirty cow. As for her white sock feet, they looked more like muck boots than church socks. Her legs also were plastered with muck. Izzy’s hands resembled leather gloves in color. Indeed, no part of her seemed to be clean.
Izzy smiled at her Mother. “I’m ready for church!”
Izzy’s Mother sighed. “How did you get so dirty so fast?”
“What? I just petted Anabel and Mr. Cogbern.”
“Apparently Mr. Cogbern went potty while you were holding him.”
For the first time, the little girl looked down at herself. The smile drooped on her face as she saw her filthy feet. She brushed her hands off on her dress and wiped her feet in the grass.
Izzy hung her head as she realized what she had done.
“Come on, let’s hurry and get you cleaned up and looking respectable before your Father sees you — or smells you.” Her Mother stood up and started marching into the house stifling a chuckle.
Little Izzy started to follow her Mother into the house.
“Wait a second. Let’s get those socks off before you track barnyard filth all over the house.”
Mother squatted down and peeled the nasty socks off her little daughter. She nearly lost her breakfast when she saw the cow manure oozing between Izzy’s toes. Next, she led her to the sink and helped her wash her hands and feet. She picked out new, clean clothes for her to wear and put the filthy ones in the washing machine. After about the fastest bath time she had ever taken, the little girl was once again looking —and smelling— like a sweet little princess again, instead of a cow.
Soon, she was clean again and on her way to church with her Mother and Father. The church bell rang as walked into the church. The people of the town were gathered to praise their Lord. As little Izzy sang, no one would have guessed that she had been covered in barn muck just an hour before church.
