Satan was having a wonderful time. Victory seemed to be within his grasp.
“Just look at how things are going down there,” he cried to his demon followers. “Look at the disgusting way God’s people are behaving. They are proving God a total failure.”
The demons dutifully nodded. They never dared to disagree with Satan. They started making mental lists of God-insults that they could throw out whenever Satan was listening to them.
“And this upstart who calls himself the Messiah? HE WILL DIE TOMORROW. A shameful death. We will laugh and celebrate, won’t we?”
The demons cheered, although many were thinking that Satan would surely find some way to ruin their joy. But they kept those thoughts to themselves.
Satan was thrilled to find his plan was working. God had messed up so many of his plans over the millenia. But this one worked perfectly and Yeshua was arrested. The thought came that he had failed in the part of the plan that called for Yeshua to turn on God and try to run away. It had been surprising when Yeshua had accepted the idea of being tortured to death and humiliated, just because God wanted it that way. Still, Satan told himself everything was going well.
Before dawn, the next morning, demons and fallen angels from all over the world gathered near Jerusalem. Today’s plan would require a combined and mighty effort. Today, God’s plan would be RUINED. That silly so-called Messiah had not made any effort to fight the Romans. What sort of a Messiah would fail so miserably?
Carefully keeping their presence secret, the minions of Satan started working on the people in Jerusalem, reminding them of how Yeshua had not got rid of the Romans and so was a fake – a fake who had shown very serious disrespect for the priests! Obviously he was not from God.
Soon the crowds were yelling, “Crucify Him!”
Then that long, slow walk. It was so funny when Yeshua collapsed and a stranger had to be forced to carry the cross beam. Obviously God was not helping Him. Satan had to put some effort into hiding his surprise over that. He had expected more interference from God, and had his fallen angel warriors standing guard. But God made no effort to rescue Yeshua.
At last Yeshua was nailed to the cross. Nothing was going wrong at all.
Enjoying himself, he sent his demons through the crowds, making them throw terrible insults at Yeshua.
“He saved others. Himself He cannot save!”
Satan felt wonderful.
Then a dreadful, frightening moment. What was that Yeshua had prayed?
“Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
A moment of fear – then he pulled himself together and got the demons back on the job of insulting Yeshua.
Suddenly – it was over. Yeshua was dead. If only he had not made that victory cry at the end – “It is finished.”
That was the cry warring generals made when the fighting was finished and they had won a decisive victory. It was unsettling. But he pushed his fears away. Yeshua was dead. He – Satan – had won!
Satan organised his demons to keep watch over the soldiers guarding the tomb. It was essential they did their job properly.
They did.
Three days later.
Satan’s scream of frustration echoed through the Heavens.
Yeshua had risen from the dead.
Satan had made the worst possible mistake. He had killed the Messiah only to see him rise from the dead.
Demons trembled, knowing Satan would be looking for signs of disrespect. Even the fallen angels struggled in vain to hide from Satan. Thoughts of rebellion were tempting. There were many among them who would have loved to take Satan’s place.
Such thoughts had to be kept very, very secret.
Satan set about training his troops to destroy the church. Deep down inside he knew that he could not win. God would make sure of that. But Satan set about working as much evil as he could into the hearts of those who were following God. Many clung to God and could not be corrupted. But lots could! Satan was determined to take as many as possible with him!
So he and his hordes got busy.
There was a lot of damage to initiate.
