Up and down each nerve
Shot pain.
And she wobbled,
Wobbled like a spinning top,
Teetered like its spin
Was coming to a stop.
Her wonky legs were buckling,
Giving way against her will.
She fell.
And she sprawled,
Sprawled across the concrete ground,
Spread out like a jellyfish,
A dishevelled mound.
She knew she looked unseemly
On the city path,
Like a drunk.
And she sobbed,
Sobbed for the indignity
Of her unresponsive body,
Her fragility.
A giggling bevy looked with scorn,
Judged her trash,
Walked by,
And laughed.,
Laughed without knowing,
Sniggered at her state,
And kept going.
An older couple paused to look,
Tut-tutted to each other,
Skirted round,
And passed,
Passed and showed no care,
Embarrassed to have seen
Her lying there.
Then came a shuffling scrawny man
With trolley full of who-knows-what,
Who stopped,
And asked,
Asked could he help in any way,
Spoke in a kindly tone.
His tousled hair was grey.
He helped her up and to a seat,
Brought coffee in a cup,
Showed her care.
It was compassion,
Compassion shown for no reward,
A neighbour to a stranger,
A service to his Lord.
He used his phone to call a cab,
To take her a doctor.
He paid the fare
And waved goodbye.
Goodbye kind man with tousled hair.
What was your name,
Stranger who showed such care?
