Idly gazing out my front window
I first saw her across the street,
Mowing her lawn with an old push mower,
Her wiry gray hair flying free.
She invited me to her home one day
To share conversation and some tea.
She prepared a tasty treat for us
As she opened home and heart to me.
She shared old photos tattered with age
And told me stories of a life gone by.
I was moved to see her now-faded beauty,
As her memories brought a tear to my eye.
Days later I heard a soft knock on the door.
I opened it to find her standing there
Cradling an injured, desperate bird,
Thinking our family would offer care.
Four kids crowded close to see her gift,
Then we were startled by a loud voice,
“Get that thing out of here”, came the dreaded sound.
We all understood we had no choice.
She hurried down the walkway,
Shielding the creature from the shouts.
The kids quietly disappeared;
I stood shaking, trying to block it out.
I shut the heavy door between us
Closing out possibility.
A firm good-bye to more than it seemed,
Giving up the hope of hospitality
Suddenly I had to realize
What the world I inhabited really was:
For the bird, for me, for four young kids,
A place that didn’t foster love.
It was not new or unexpected but
An earthquake jarred my foundation.
All I had constructed and believed was true
Was crushed by this revelation.
No longer could I pretend all was well,
Blinding light revealed truth to me.
My will now joined a knowing heart
As I searched for God’s words urgently.
I saw her only one more time.
She came to say a last good-bye,
She was relocating far away.
I expressed a sad and heavy sigh.
We spoke few words except through eyes
As we paused on the porch landing.
We slowly took a step and hugged
As I felt her understanding.
Though I didn’t know it even then,
My path of life had turned.
I knew that God Himself intended me
To act on all I’d learned.
This incident which seems so small
Holds a pivotal place in my life.
My eyes were opened, my heart was broken,
At the beginning of an honest life.
