he knew he liked her right away.
After dating for a short time,
the draft notice came,
and he was off to serve his country.
He was honest, hard working, rugged,
trustworthy, a man of few words.
He said what he meant,
meant what he said.
In his letters,
his honest, tender words
expressed he knew
he’d found the love of his life.
She was kind, gentle, patient.
considerate of him.
She respected, trusted, adored him.
He knew she was a treasure
worth holding and treating with care.
During his three day passes,
in those moments alone,
he held her, sang to her.
He knew to respect her,
cherish her.
He proposed,
she said yes.
He went overseas,
away for a year, wounded.
During those hard days,
he knew she was praying,
holding onto hope,
waiting for his return.
He came home,
they embraced.
He knew he didn’t want to wait
any longer,
for he’d found a woman of virtue,
genuine, caring, loving.
They married right away.
He knew
the treasure she was.
He knew,
for nearly 58 years,
that he was blessed.
