With a mischievous grin, Patsy said, “Mama, we aren’t running—just me!”
“Ha,” her mother said, “What’s so important that you break the rule not to run inside?”
“Well, Mama, you told me to tell Grandma that dinner is almost ready, and she said she’s not coming to dinner, and I know meatloaf and mashed potatoes are her favorite. She said she’s going to fast for Lent instead, cause she wants to nourish her soul. What does ‘fast ‘mean, and what is ‘Lent? You’ve told me that God put a soul inside us to worship Him, even before we were born, but what does ‘nourish’ mean?”
“Whoa again, my girl of many questions. Let’s start with the word ‘Lent’. You know the story about Easter, how Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and then He rose again so that we will get to live in heaven with Him some day. ‘Lent’ is a period of some weeks before Easter that we take time to remember how he sacrificed for us. Often people choose to sacrifice something that they like to show how they appreciate Him. To fast is to go without food. Grandma is fasting her favorite dinner. ‘Nourish’ is a thing done for good health. Grandma reads the Bible and prays during the mealtime to help her soul be healthy, so you might say, ‘Grandma’s sole purpose is to please God.’”
“Is fasting the only way you can nourish the soul.”
“No, Patsy. Sometimes you can give up something else you enjoy like watching TV for a time. You can give extra money in the offering or do a special kindness for someone to show Jesus how much you appreciate Him.
Just then Dad showed up for dinner, and Patsy told him, “Grandma’s sole, soul purpose is to please God.
Mama said, “Good girl! You got it. After dinner we’ll talk about how you might want to celebrate Lent. Now wash your hands and let’s eat.”
