Topic: REED / READ (02/23/23)
I was born a reader—you know what I mean—the kind of person who thinks the library or a bookstore is a place of great joy. I’m one of those who can sit in the middle of a crowd or in a room with the television blaring and be oblivious to everything, but the book in my hand.

My love for reading officially bloomed in the first grade, when I could match the words with the pictures in my little books at home. I entered a wondrous world of magic, from which I have never exited. My interest peaked in third grade when I finished reading The Wizard of Oz and ran to the school librarian to ask for another one just like that one. She said, “I’m sorry, dear, but there’s not another one just like that.”

I thrived on stories, beginning with fairy tales. I was always the fair maiden, rescued by the noble knight on his white horse. This led to a forever fascination with love stories.

One Christmas I received a book of Bible stories, which I read and reread many times. This book, along with my relationship with the Lord, became the foundation for my study of the Bible and has lasted for a lifetime of spiritual encouragement and enrichment.

As a child, I often got into trouble for sneaking away to find a good hiding place to read when I was supposed to be doing my chores. I must admit that, even as an adult, I have found reading to be more fun than cleaning house. Once when I was a little girl, I hid an oil lamp under my tented covers to read late at night. I was really enjoying that till my dad came to check on me. There was no repeat performance.

In high school, I fell in love with the beautiful language of poetry. This was one of the things that prompted me to become an English teacher and to share that same appreciation of imagery and sound with my students, then later to become a poet, myself.

Reading can me laugh or cry or tremble like a reed in the rain. As Popeye said, “I yam what I yam,” and for me, that’s a reader.

Oh I enjoyed this. I also can really relate (except the part about being good with poems!). The MC feels so real and relatable. I was smiling right to the end. I did worry you weren't going to get the reed mention in there, but you didn't disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this read.
