(SINGS) “While shepherds watch their flocks by night, all seated on the ground…” NOTICES THE AUDIENCE Oh! I didn’t see you all there, I was just enjoying the song written about my husband and his friends. I am so proud to be the wife of my Jacob.
And it’s not just because he got to worship the newborn Messiah. I was proud of him long before that. I don’t think you know how extraordinary these shepherds were. There is a special tower, Migdal Edar, right outside of Bethlehem.
My husband and his friends were shepherds with very exclusive duties. They weren’t watching over just any sheep out in the field. They were watching over ewes who would soon be giving birth.
Those lambs were destined to be sacrifices in the temple. At least that was their hoped-for destiny. For they had to be without spotless, without flaw or defect.
The shepherds would take the ewes about to give birth to Migdal Edar. My husband told me how after a lamb was born, he would examine it for any flaw or defect.
And if it was perfect, he would wrap it in swaddling cloths and put it in a manger so it wouldn’t hurt or mark itself, making it unfit for sacrifice. The swaddling cloths came from used undergarments of the priests. Such a honor for my husband to be among these shepherds. But a greater honor would be coming to them.
I remember when Jacob came running into our home, so excited, he could hardly speak.
“Jacob, why have to been so late coming home, I was worr--” before I could finish my question, an excited mishmash of words came pouring out of his mouth.
“Angel, many angels, bright lights, manger, baby, messiah!”
This was so unlike my Jacob! I put my hand on his arm.
“Take a deep breath, tell me what happened.”
Jacob takes a deep breath and tells me,
“I can’t even describe it to you, Hannah, words fail me. First, an angel, can you believe it? an angel appears to us, and the glory of the Lord shone around us, and we were terrified out of our wits.
The angel says to us, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. “ (Luke 2:11-12 NIV)
And then, the sky is FILLED with angels, angels EVERYWHERE. Praising God and glorifying Him.
The angel didn’t tell us where to go, but he didn’t have to. “A sign to you, a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger?” The Messiah? It could be only one place.
“Migdal Edar” Jacob and I said it together.
Of course, where else could the Messiah be born?
Jacob continued his story,
“Can you believe it, after all these years, tens of thousands of little lambs sacrificed for our sins, the Messiah has come! Our Savior has come! I told the others I had to tell you first but I have to go. Everyone has to hear the news! The Savior has come!”
And off Jacob ran to help his friends spread the news. The Messiah had come!
And everyone who heard the news was amazed by what my husband and his friends told them.
What about you? Have you lost the amazement of Christmas?
Christ the Savior has come!
