I am not Italian leaning in dear Pisa just by chance
I don’t reside near tarmacs to track dense traffic planes
Nor am I filled with water and branded with town names
My job does not put me in between a lot of trees
Way out in the forest where a flame might catch a breeze
Bells are not attached to me to bong and chime and ring
I have no way to send a call or know just how to ping
God’s job for me was to stand up strong and tall
He gave me roots to go so deep to make sure I do not fall
If they held a contest to crown the oldest flora entry
I’d win, hands down, since my span exceeds more than a century
My limbs have reached for sunlight and welcomed many seasons
I’ve sheltered tons of creature homes built for snuggle reasons
The things I’ve seen and suffered can never be explained
I stood on guard when lightning struck and always when it rained
They say my parts are breaking off and crashing to the ground
The yard is full of evidence, so I guess that thinking’s sound
There are two of us getting weaker and know the end is near
It’s even hard to make leaves green in the spring of every year
But like all things God made for missions on His earth
I did His bid with shelter, especially for little birds from birth
The lady of the house prays that winds won’t sling me like a shot
She asks the Lord to keep me from landing where I should not
Even though I rose so much taller than the rest
And gladly gave refuge to each creature with a nest
It may be time for me to go and new growth to commence
Life’s cycle is for every living thing, which makes a lot of sense
When time is up and our destiny here is done
Is it Godly roots that gave us strength to make our race well run?
Perhaps someone looked up to us for a truth that held their key
But can we say we were as stalwart as this fortress called a tree?

*A nod to two very tall and old “towers” in my front yard who keep dropping enough wood to build a cabin or a bonfire, or maybe a treehouse!
Ezekiel 31:5 (NLT)
This great tree towered high, higher than all the other trees around it. It prospered and grew long thick branches because of all the water at its roots.
