Greetings to my fellow bringers of warmth. Perhaps you bring soup to an ailing neighbor, give a coat to a homeless person, or buy a portable heater for a struggling senior citizen. All of these bring warmth to the body.
And some of you bring warmth to a cold, lonely heart through a hug, a “how are you?”, a handwritten note or, in hundreds of other ways. But you wonder, does anyone even notice? Sometimes you feel unknown, unseen, unappreciated. I
I know the feeling. For my Biblical claim to fame is bringing warmth to an elderly, famous king. I am Abishag.
It all began when King David was very old and very cold. He could not get warm no matter how many blankets covered him. So they decided to get a young virgin to lay next to him, and keep him warm. They scoured the countryside looking for the most beautiful woman.
I was astounded when they chose me. Me? Little Abishag, sleeping next to the great King David? I felt so unworthy.
My father put his hand on my arm. “My Abishag, don’t be afraid. For Jehovah looks at the heart, and He knows you are not only beautiful on the outside but have a beautiful, caring heart. Look how you have taken care of your friends and family. You bring warmth to everyone you meet. Jehovah has chosen you to help the king.”
And so I took care of King David, warming him at night, tending to his needs during the day. And when he died, aside from some palace intrigue that is for another story, I vanished into obscurity.
For I had only been what you might call a (STRUGGLES TO FIND THE WORDS) human hot water bottle. I never had relations with the King, that was neither my place nor my purpose. And so I had no children by King David.
But then years later, came the time for me to go to heaven. And Jehovah said the most amazing thing to me.
“Abishag, thank you for warming my precious David, the man after My own heart. For decades, David warmed my heart with his worshipful psalms. It pleased me to see you warming his body and tending to his needs. Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
And I realized, I hadn’t just warmed King David by my service, I had warmed the heart of the King of the Universe.
Those of you who warm others: You are warming the heart of the King of the Universe. Be sure of this. God knows, God sees, God appreciates you. Well done, good and faithful servants.
