WOMAN ADDRESSES AUDIENCE
Have you felt like an unsung hero, that no one cares for what you do? Other people with more flashy abilities get all the praise and applause. I must admit I succumb to such feelings at times, and then I think about Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus. And I wonder what it would have been like to be Martha.
PUTS ON HEADDRESS
Nobody cares. Nobody cares. Nobody cares but me. Nobody cares. Nobody cares. Nobody cares but me.
The self-pitying mournful melody plays in my head as I sweep the floor and tidy the house in preparation for Jesus’ visit. Nobody cares that we need to have our home ready for Jesus and his disciples.
Nobody cares, nobody cares, nobody cares but me. Nobody cares. Nobody cares. Nobody cares but me. The song plays through my head again as I finish cleaning and then start to prepare a dinner for SIXTEEN people. Nobody cares that Jesus and his disciples get enough to eat. Nobody cares but me.
Certainly not Mary. Speaking of which, where is Mary? Where is that dreamer off to now? There she is, just sitting there listening to Jesus when there’s all this work to be done. There’s no point talking to Mary, she never listens to me. Perhaps the Master will tell Mary to help me, she always listens to Jesus.
“Master, don’t you care that my sister is leaving all the work for me to do? Tell her to help me!” And then Jesus looks at me, the way only Jesus can, with love, but correction.
“Martha, my precious Martha, you are so distracted by so many things. But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.”
Mary has chosen what is better. I had been so busy being busy taking care of Jesus without being with Jesus. The Messiah is in my home, and I don’t have time to spend with him.
I make sure I spend time with Jesus and lessen my expectations on myself. For I have a much better refrain playing in my head, “Jesus cares, Jesus cares, Jesus cares for me. Jesus cares, Jesus cares, Jesus cares for me.”
WOMAN REMOVES HEADDRESS
I realize that Mary and Martha each showed how much they loved Jesus in their own way, Martha through acts of service, Mary through sitting at His feet in devotion.
Just like two-part harmony brings a depth to a song, their harmony brought depth to their love for Jesus. A second soprano doesn’t criticize a soprano for singing the melody and vice versa. Their differences bring harmony and beauty.
And as I serve Jesus in the gifts He’s given me, I join in the harmonic chorus with my millions of sisters and brothers each serving Jesus in their special gifts.
“Jesus cares, Jesus cares, Jesus cares for me. Jesus cares, Jesus cares, Jesus cares for me.”
